RIP Bruce Morley

I didn’t get a chance to know drummer/historian/educator/writer Bruce Morley during my PhD- he was, unfortunately a bit too young (professionally speaking) to fit into my thesis, and now it is too late. Bruce passed away last week after a long battle with cancer. Although I never got to know him, the one thing that everyone in the New Zealand music industry knew about Bruce was that he had played with everyone! And really that’s not an exaggeration, go take a look at the beautiful obituary that Chris Bourke has posted on his blog Blue Smoke, and you’ll see a very extensive, but still partial list of the people Bruce played with over his career. Another thing that Bruce was well known for was his passion for promoting music through writing and performance, especially local music to local audiences. For that people like myself owe him a huge debt. So thanks Bruce, for all the passion you demonstrated in print, on the air and in person, you will be greatly missed.
